Why new dryer vents fail early in Houston

Most bad vent runs here start as a builder afterthought. Laundry got placed in an interior closet, and the duct had to travel. In 1960s-80s tract homes that means a long interior-closet lateral. In two-story subdivisions it means a second-floor-to-roof vertical run, often 20-35 ft with two or more elbows. Add Gulf Coast humidity, and the moisture the duct must carry is already high. A route that works in a dry climate goes damp and cakes lint into a wet felt lining.

Installation fixes the route, not just the pipe. Rigid metal, joints taped rather than screwed (screw tips catch lint and build a dam). Strapped so it cannot sag between joists. Every elbow adds resistance, so we count them before choosing a path. Short side-wall vents on postwar ranches are often the better target even if the closet sits farther away.

Terminations matter as much. Roof caps here collect pine needles and oak catkins on top of lint. Birds, wasps, and squirrels work on gable and roof hoods constantly. A hood with a real damper and no interior screen vents better and resists nesting.

Behind pedestal-base machines, foil duct gets crushed flat. A rigid offset or recessed wall box solves that for good.
